The Social Security payment date calculator below shows your next deposit dates based on your benefit type and birth date. Social Security benefits in the United States are paid on a fixed schedule set by the Social Security Administration (SSA): SSI recipients are paid on the 1st of each month, while Social Security retirement and disability (SSDI) recipients are paid on the second, third, or fourth Wednesday of the month depending on their birthday.
Use the tool below to see your upcoming payment dates for the next six months. No personal information is stored or transmitted.
How the Social Security payment schedule works
The SSA assigns payment dates based on the type of benefit and, for Social Security retirement and SSDI, on the day of the month the beneficiary was born. This schedule applies to payments deposited onto a Direct Express card, a bank account, or any other payment method linked to the benefit.
The three Social Security payment dates follow this pattern each month:
- Born on the 1st through 10th: paid on the second Wednesday of the month
- Born on the 11th through 20th: paid on the third Wednesday of the month
- Born on the 21st through 31st: paid on the fourth Wednesday of the month
If a scheduled Wednesday falls on a federal holiday, the SSA issues the payment on the preceding business day. The same rule applies to SSI: if the 1st of the month is a weekend or holiday, the deposit arrives on the last business day of the prior month, which is why some SSI recipients occasionally see two payments in a single calendar month.
SSI payment dates vs. Social Security payment dates
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security retirement or disability benefits follow different schedules and should not be confused. SSI is a needs-based program funded by general tax revenues, and payments are always scheduled for the 1st of the month. Social Security retirement and SSDI payments are funded through payroll taxes and follow the birthday-based Wednesday schedule described above.
Some recipients receive both SSI and Social Security at the same time. In that case, both payment schedules apply independently. The SSI portion arrives on or before the 1st, and the Social Security portion arrives on the Wednesday assigned to the birth date group.
When does the deposit actually appear on my Direct Express card?
For Direct Express cardholders, deposits are typically available on the same day the SSA issues the payment. However, the exact time can vary. Some cardholders see the funds early in the morning, while others may not see the deposit until later in the day. If your payment date has arrived and the balance has not updated yet, checking again later the same day is the recommended first step before contacting support.
If the deposit still has not appeared by the end of the payment day, review your account through the official Direct Express portal or app to check for pending transactions. A guide to all balance check options is available here: How to check your Direct Express balance. If you see a pending entry, the funds are in processing and should post shortly. More detail on that status is available in the Direct Express pending deposit guide.
What to do if your payment does not arrive on the expected date
A payment that does not appear on the expected date is not automatically missing. The most common reasons are bank processing delays, a federal holiday that shifted the date, or a deposit that is still processing and will appear later the same day. Wait until the end of the business day before treating the situation as a problem.
If the payment has not arrived by the following business day, contact the SSA directly to verify your payment status. Do not rely on third-party sites or unofficial phone numbers to check benefit status. The official SSA contact information is available at ssa.gov. For questions about your Direct Express card specifically, use the customer service number on the back of your card.
Frequently asked questions
Does the calculator store my information?
No. The tool runs entirely in your browser. No data is sent to any server and nothing is stored.
My birthday is on the 1st. Do I follow the SSI schedule or the birthday schedule?
If you receive Social Security retirement or SSDI benefits and your birthday falls on the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd of the month, the SSA pays those benefits on the 3rd of the month rather than on a Wednesday. This is an exception to the standard birthday-based Wednesday schedule that applies to beneficiaries who began receiving benefits before May 1, 1997, or whose birthday falls within the first three days of the month. If you are unsure which schedule applies to you, verify directly with the SSA.
Why does the calculator show a date different from what I expected?
The tool uses the standard SSA payment schedule. If your actual payment date is different, you may have a special payment arrangement, you may receive a different benefit type than selected, or you may fall under the pre-1997 exception. The SSA is the only source that can confirm your individual payment date.
Can I see the full 2026 payment calendar?
Yes. A full breakdown of deposit dates for Direct Express cardholders is available in the Direct Express deposit dates guide.
If your deposit shows the right date but has not arrived at the expected time, check the what time does Direct Express deposit hit guide for more detail on timing patterns.
