Direct Express cardholders receive federal benefit payments according to the official Social Security Administration payment schedule. When your payment is issued, it is automatically deposited onto your Direct Express card — usually on the same day the SSA releases it.
When Direct Express deposits arrive
The timing depends on the type of benefit you receive:
- SSI payments: deposited on the 1st of each month (or the last business day before, if the 1st falls on a weekend or holiday)
- Social Security payments: deposited on a Wednesday based on your birth date — see the full calendar below
- Pre-May 1997 recipients and those receiving both SS and SSI: Social Security is paid on the 3rd of each month; SSI on the 1st

SSI payment schedule 2026
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments are normally issued on the first day of the month. When the 1st falls on a weekend or federal holiday, payment arrives on the last business day before it.
This is why some SSI recipients may see two payments in one month — one is the early payment for the following month, not an extra payment.

Back pay deposits do not follow the regular Wednesday or 1st-of-month schedule — they are processed separately by the SSA and can arrive on any business day. If your payment has not appeared yet, common causes include bank processing delays, federal holidays, temporary system maintenance, or a deposit issued later than expected.
