Direct Express Card Not Arrived? How to Track It and What to Do (2026)

Whether you are waiting for a new Direct Express card after enrolling, or a replacement card after losing one, this guide explains what to expect, how to track it, and exactly what to do if your card does not arrive.

How long does it take to get a Direct Express card?

Situation Expected delivery time
New enrollment (first card) Approximately 2 weeks from enrollment
Replacement card (standard) 7–10 business days
Replacement card (expedited, $13.50 fee) Faster — varies by location, not guaranteed overnight

Cards are mailed to the address on file with Direct Express. If you have moved recently and your address is not updated, the card will go to your old address.

How to track your Direct Express card

Standard Direct Express cards are sent by standard mail and do not include automatic tracking. However, if you selected expedited shipping ($13.50 fee), the representative who processed your request should have given you a tracking number when you called.

To check the status of a card in transit:

  1. Call Direct Express customer service using the number on any previous card or correspondence, or call 1-888-741-1115
  2. Ask for the status of your card order and whether tracking is available
  3. Confirm the mailing address they have on file — a mismatch is the most common cause of non-arrival

What to do if your card has not arrived

If you are within the expected delivery window

Wait until at least 10 business days have passed from the date your card was ordered before calling to report non-receipt. Standard mail delivery can vary, and calling too early may not produce useful information.

If delivery time has passed

  1. Verify your address on file. Call customer service and confirm the exact address where the card was sent. Even a small error — a missing apartment number, an old ZIP code — can cause delivery failure.
  2. Report non-receipt. Tell the representative your card has not arrived. They can flag the card as undelivered and initiate a new one.
  3. Request a replacement. A replacement card will be sent to your updated address. Standard delivery takes 7–10 business days. Expedited shipping ($13.50) is available if you need the card sooner.

If your address has changed

This is the most common reason a card does not arrive. Direct Express sends cards to the address registered in the system — if you moved, updated your address with the SSA, but did not separately update it with Direct Express, the card goes to the wrong address.

To update your address with Direct Express:

  • Log in to the portal at web.usdirectexpress.com and update your address in account settings
  • Or call customer service and update your address over the phone
  • Or use the Direct Express mobile app — select Profile, then Contact Information

Note: updating your address with the SSA does not automatically update it with Direct Express. You must update both separately.

Can you access your money while waiting for the card?

If you are waiting for a new or replacement card and need access to your funds:

  • Transfer to a bank account — if you have a linked personal bank account, you can initiate a transfer through the portal ($1.50 fee, up to 3 days) → Transfer guide
  • Request expedited card delivery — $13.50 fee, faster than standard mail → Expedited card guide

Scam warning: fake card tracking services

Warning: There are scam services that claim to track or “expedite” your Direct Express card for a fee. These are not affiliated with Direct Express. Only call the official number on previous Direct Express correspondence or 1-888-741-1115 to check card status. → Read the scam guide

Frequently asked questions

How do I track my Direct Express card in the mail?

Standard Direct Express cards are sent by regular mail without automatic tracking. If you paid for expedited shipping, you should have received a tracking number from customer service. To check any card’s status, call Direct Express customer service at the number on previous correspondence or 1-888-741-1115.

My Direct Express card has not arrived — what do I do?

Wait until 10 business days have passed from when the card was ordered. Then call customer service to verify your address on file and report non-receipt. If your address was incorrect, update it and request a new card.

Does updating my address with Social Security update my Direct Express address too?

No. Direct Express and the SSA are separate systems. If you moved, you need to update your address with both the SSA and with Direct Express separately. Call customer service or update your address in the Direct Express portal or app.

What is the Direct Express card tracking number?

Standard cards do not come with a tracking number. If you paid for expedited shipping ($13.50), customer service provides a tracking number when processing your request. If you did not receive one, call customer service to ask whether tracking information is available for your shipment.
